What is a timing belt?

A timing belt (or cam belt) is a durable toothed belt that keeps an engine’s crankshaft and camshaft(s) synchronised. The timing belt may also drive other engine ancilliaries such as the water pump. Correctly set and in good condition it ensures the inlet and exhaust valves open and close at the correct time – avoiding contact with the pistons – during inlet and exhaust strokes. Failure of a timing belt can often cause serious internal damage the engine.

When should it be changed

Timing belts should be changed in line with the vehicle manufacturers guidelines; this is usually at set mileage or age. At Motorcare Woking we are experts in replacing timing belts or, if the worst happens, repairing damage as a result of belt failure.
